The Knicks do not need to rush an extension with Deuce McBride before camp. They do need to be honest about what keeping every option open actually means.
Stefan Bondy reported that New York is unlikely to extend McBride, Karl-Anthony Towns, or Josh Hart before the season. McBride averaged 12.0 points, 2.6 assists, and 2.4 rebounds in 41 games last year, so he is not some forgotten name at the end of the bench.

The Knicks need a Deuce decision
McBride can help a contender right now. He has also become the sort of player other teams can talk themselves into wanting, because a guard who competes, defends, and can score in bursts always has a market.
I would not give him away just to make a transaction happen. The Knicks won a title with him in the mix, and there is real value in keeping a player who already knows how to play off the bigger names.

Waiting does make sense if the front office wants to see the first few months of the season. It also creates a live decision every time another team calls and asks about a useful rotation guard.
The clean answer is not obvious. New York needs to decide whether McBride is part of the long plan or the player who helps bring back the next piece of it.
