Alexis Mac Allister has admitted there was a real possibility of him leaving Liverpool in the summer transfer window.

The 27-year-old midfielder was linked with an exit from Anfield in the summer but no moves materialised and the Argentine remained at the club. However, on the eve of Liverpool's first Champions League game against Atletico Madrid, Mac Allister revealed he had the opportunity to leave Anfield but has been left 'sad' at the lack of movement in a new contract.

He told reporters: “There was a chance of course (to leave). I received the news that the club was not in a position to offer me a new contract, which of course makes me very, very sad.

“Everyone can see I give 100 percent for this football club, every single day in training, games. Of course, I can have very good games, bad games, like everyone, but I always give my best.

“I see Dominik and Ryan renewing their contracts and that makes me very happy because they deserve it, but at the same time it makes me a little bit sad that I didn’t get mine.”

Mac Allister's midfield partners Ryan Gravenberch and Dominik Szoboszlai both penned lucrative new long-term contracts this year, but the Argentine has not been given any indication he is in line for improved terms.

His current deal expires in 2028 and has led to speculation that Liverpool could cash in on a player who underperformed last season.

Mac Allister added: “There wasn’t any direct conversation with me, it was my agent. I don’t want to say things that they never said but what I got from my agent was that they were not in a position to renew me.

“As I said before, it’s really sad. We won a Premier League together, we went through difficult times as well together and I always did my best. We will see, we will see what happens, but of course it makes me a little bit sad.”

Asked why he rejected the chance to leave Liverpool, Mac Allister replied: “Because this is the right club. That’s why. As I said before, I love being here and this is something special.”

Adding: “I’m always the same guy, I’m always the same player and I’m not going to change. This is who I am.

“These three years at the club, I’m doing very good things, as I say we went through difficult times, we went through a lot of things.

“We won a Premier League, we won a Carabao Cup, so for me it’s a very successful period of my life. I don’t think I have to prove something, but of course I have to show the level that I can perform and hopefully that’s the case.”
