Knicks center Karl-Anthony Towns holds the championship trophy
The Knicks have a Karl-Anthony Towns decision coming, and it is hard to find a clean way through it after a championship season.
Stefan Bondy reported that New York is unlikely to extend Towns before the season. The report put his maximum extension at four years and $272 million, while a much lower figure near $180 million was described as a possible range for a deal.
Those are reported numbers, not an agreement. They still show why the Knicks can let this breathe instead of forcing an answer before camp.
New York went 53-29 and then 16-3 in the postseason on its way to the title. Towns was part of that run, and the front office cannot pretend a huge contract choice exists in a vacuum.

The Knicks have time to make a hard call
I would rather see the first part of the season before putting a number like that on the books. Winning a title earns a player respect, but it should not force a team to skip the hard questions about cost, role, and the years ahead.
There is also no reason for panic. Towns remains under contract, and the Knicks have a chance to watch this group defend what it won before deciding how much of the next version should be committed now.

The fan response will be simple because the player is good and the banner is already up. The front-office choice is harder because the number attached to a potential extension is enormous.
Waiting can be the sensible move. The Knicks can value Towns, celebrate what he helped accomplish, and still make sure the next contract is right for the team.
