Alexis Mac Allister has been backed to regain top form at Liverpool after the Argentine dropped a bombshell statement on his contract situation ahead of facing Atletico Madrid in the Champions League.
Former Reds man Stephen Warnock believes that Mac Allister still has a lot to offer at Anfield. The former Brighton man signed for Liverpool in 2023.
"The one thing I would say is that there's been a lot of talk about Mac Allister and his legs going and not being able to play like he used to," Warnock told PariuriX, speaking before the player's comments on his contract.
"He was undertrained and I think you could see that last year with the fatigue in the team. I think when you saw him under Jurgen Klopp and the way he pressed and played, it was a completely different player.
"I think we saw that from him at the World Cup for Argentina as well. That high pressing and intensity, and I think that he will get that back under Iraola, so I don't have an issue with Mac Allister whatsoever.
"I know there's quite a lot of people trying to jump on to him and saying he should be sold. I'm completely against that whatsoever. I think that they need more bodies there, more rotation to keep them fresher for longer."
Starting the new season playing well, Mac Allister impressed at Ipswich last Friday. He was put forward ahead of the Champions League visit of Atletico Madrid to speak to the media.

"As everyone knows, I received the news that the club was not in a position to offer me a new contract, which makes me very, very sad," Mac Allister said. "Everyone can see I give my 100 percent for this football club, every single day in training and games.
"Of course, I can have very good games, very bad games like everyone. I always give my best. And I see Dominik (Szoboszlai) and Ryan (Gravenberch) renewing their contracts, and that makes me very happy because they deserve it, but at the same time, it makes me a little bit sad that I didn't get mine.
"Of course, there is still time. The fans don't need to worry because I will give my 100 percent until the last day I'm here.
"We will see what happens. There were options to leave this summer, and I think right now I'm in the right club, and I have the mindset to give my 100 percent for this club.

"There wasn't any direct conversation with me — it was with my agent. I don't want to say things they never said, but what I got from my agent was that they were not in a position to renew me. It's really sad because we won a Premier League together, we've been through difficult times together, and I always give my best. We will see what happens, but of course, it makes me a little bit sad."
Liverpool.com says: Mac Allister really struggled for most of last season, so it is a surprise that he wasn't offered a new deal. Additionally, the Argentine will be neraly 30 by the time his existing contract expires. In the cases of Gravenberch and Szoboszlai, they are much younger and will be able to perform for longer. It makes sense that they were the priority when it came to extensions.
