Heat predicted to sign $21M high-motor 7-year veteran, reliable shooter released by Timberwolves image
The Miami Heat have one final roster spot left, and they are being pretty stingy with it. It is still unclear what the team is going to do with the spot, but it almost certainly seems like a guard will be signed.
Gabe Vincent has become a popular name over the last couple of weeks, but it does not look like he will be the player who gets signed.
“I do think the former Heat guard Gabe Vincent has some fans in this building and some fans on that roster who would love for him to be back into the fold, right now it's looking like Miami is not a outcome for Gabe Vincent. But I do think Miami's roster isn't exactly done and the guard position will be something they look at moving forward," Bleacher Report's Jake Fischer said.
Miami also decided to pass on veteran Ben Simmons.
“A team in win-now mode has to draw a valuation line between players who can be developed/reclaimed and those needed to be able to contribute in the moment, without questions of whether they are healthy enough or still skilled enough. The Kings make all the sense for Ben Simmons and he makes all the sense for them. There is no pressure to produce in Sacramento," Sun Sentinel's Ira Winderman wrote.
There are more reliable options available for the Heat. Bleacher Report’s Eric Pincus believes Miami will sign John Konchar.
“The 6'5", 30-year-old veteran guard was recently dealt to the Timberwolves for Josh Green, but Minnesota waived and stretched Konchar's salary to open flexibility to sign Jonathan Kuminga. Konchar is a tough, reserve combo guard. He's not a tremendous shooter, but he's a capable role player and strong locker-room presence. Konchar could fill a spot with the Miami Heat, who need another guard. Otherwise, he may need to wait a bit for another NBA opportunity,” Pincus wrote.
This would be a great final addition for Miami, as Konchar has been a reliable player throughout his career. He can knock down shots from the outside while Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo draw defenders toward the paint.
Konchar has made $21 million over the span of his career. The Heat are hoping to build one of the best rosters in the NBA, and at this point in free agency, adding Konchar would give them one of the better remaining options.
