NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - The Pelicans on Tuesday (Sept. 8) traded recent first-round draft pick Jordan Hawkins and Micah Peavy to the Memphis Grizzlies.
NBA insider Shams Charania first reported the trade, later confirmed by the Pelicans. New Orleans is acquiring A.J. Johnson and Taj Gibson in the deal, which also sees the teams swap future second-round draft picks.
The deal clears roster space and salary cap room for New Orleans to complete its signing of free agent Bennedict Mathurin to a two-year, $16 million contract.

Hawkins, 24, was taken 14th overall by the Pelicans in the 2023 NBA draft. The 6-foot-5 shooting guard averaged 8.0 points per game in his 174 career games with New Orleans.
Peavy averaged 4.3 ppg last season over 61 games for the Pelicans in his rookie season.
Johnson, 21, was a first-round pick of Milwaukee in the 2024 draft and already is joining his fourth NBA team. The 6-5 guard was traded to Washington in February 2025, to Dallas in February 2026, and to Memphis on July 8. He has averaged 4.9 ppg in 77 NBA games.
Gibson, 41, is a 6-9 forward who has played 17 NBA seasons with eight previous teams, starting with the Chicago Bulls in 2009. He likely will be waived by the Pelicans for cap space.
