Andoni Iraola’s relationship with Richard Hughes from their time at Bournemouth played a part in him getting the Liverpool job.
Richard Hughes’ departure was confirmed by Liverpool four days after the transfer window closed and just over two years after he was appointed sporting director.
His move to Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal has since been confirmed, with former Liverpool colleagues Mark Burchill and Craig McKee also joining him.

Hughes’ departure had been expected for some time, having been linked with an exit earlier in the summer. Andoni Iraola has now admitted he was not surprised by Hughes’ decision to leave Liverpool.
“It wasn’t a surprise when the news came last weekend,” Iraola said on Tuesday ahead of Liverpool’s opening Champions League game against Atletico Madrid.
“Richard, with Michael, people who I think are very good in their jobs, they understand very well what they need to do and I wish him all the best in his next stages.
“I think now, the club, we are still working with the people that have been taking the decisions this summer, I have a continuous connection especially with Mike Gordon, we talk about the needs and who will keep working.”
Iraola added: “Now, it’s a matter of the club deciding the next step, where to go, the next direction. I think a lot of the people involved in the decisions, they are still with us every day, and I continue talking with them.
“But it’s true that, for Richard, I can only speak very well about him, and I wish him all the best now in his next adventure.”
Mike Gordon, president of Fenway Sports Group (FSG), is overseeing the search for Hughes’ replacement, with Liverpool keen to make a swift appointment.
The club will consider internal candidates but have not ruled out an external appointment. Liverpool want someone who is committed to the role for the long term.
Hughes was integral to the decision to sack Slot and appoint Iraola. When he joined Liverpool, Iraola signed only a two-year deal because he did not want to stay somewhere simply because he had a contract. His relationship with Hughes from their time at Bournemouth played a role in his appointment at Liverpool.
