Liverpool fans were probably expecting a little bit more action towards the end of the transfer window, with Bradley Barcola their only addition after the season got underway. Jeremy Jacquet, Vitor Munoz, and Ronald Araujo were added to the squad earlier in the window, but supporters bemoaned the lack of midfield signings, given they felt it was a problem area for the Reds.
Those concerns were amplified when Alexis Mac Allister claimed he was left upset by the club’s decision not to offer him a new contract, with the Argentine hinting he could’ve left this summer. Mac Allister said: "There was a chance of course (to leave). I received the news that the club was not in a position to offer me a new contract, which of course makes me very, very sad.”
It’s already led to speculation that Mac Allister could be moved on in the near future, but if that does prove to be the case, who would Liverpool replace him with? Express Sport have picked out three potential candidates…
As of 11pm on transfer deadline day, this didn’t look like a transfer Liverpool would be able to complete. But shortly after the window slammed shut, a proposed move to Chelsea collapsed, meaning Lamine Camara will stick around until January at the earliest. Liverpool reportedly asked Camara’s camp to push back on a move to Chelsea and wait for Liverpool to sign the Senegalese international. With the latest Mac Allister development, they might now have the perfect opportunity.

Fulham v Crystal Palace FC - Premier League 2026/27

It was a little surprising not to see Adam Wharton’s name mentioned more, given the top Premier League sides were being linked with plenty of midfield additions throughout the window. By all accounts, Crystal Palace were dead set on not selling, as they look to prepare for a campaign in the Europa League. However, it’s unlikely they’ll be able to keep hold of him for too much longer, and Liverpool could prove the perfect destination for Wharton.
And from one English midfielder playing in the Europa League, to another. Much like their Premier League counterparts, Bournemouth were adamant Alex Scott wouldn’t follow Andoni Iraola out of the building this summer. The 23-year-old is in the final two years of his contract, and unless the Cherries can convince him to pen a renewal, they’ll have to cash in soon. Should Scott be allowed to leave, a reunion with Iraola at Liverpool seems the most likely outcome.
