Xabi Alonso has praised Valentin Barco’s mentality and adaptation at Chelsea as the Argentine pushes for another start against Leeds United.
Barco has only started once competitively since joining Chelsea from Strasbourg, but that opportunity came in the previous round of the Carabao Cup.
The 22-year-old played the full 90 minutes of the 2-0 victory over Luton Town and produced an assured performance alongside Reece James in midfield.
Ahead of Wednesday night’s third-round tie, Alonso has now made clear that Barco has already impressed him behind the scenes.
Speaking to the official Chelsea website, Alonso described Barco as a “competitor” and highlighted his intelligence and willingness to adapt.
“He’s a competitor,” Alonso said. “You see this Argentine heart; he’s a fighter.
“He’s very good with the ball, he is very open to adapting quickly, and he is intelligent.”

Valentin Barco pushing for another Chelsea chance
Barco’s first Chelsea start already provided evidence of what Alonso is talking about.

He was heavily involved in possession, helped Chelsea regain control in midfield and played a part in the move which produced the second goal.
Alonso described that performance afterwards as “impressive”, praising Barco’s dynamism and awareness.
Opportunities have been more limited in the Premier League.
Barco appeared from the bench against Brighton but was an unused substitute during Sunday’s 2-1 defeat to Arsenal, even as Chelsea reshuffled their midfield.
Alonso instead finished that game with Reece James and Malo Gusto operating centrally.
That decision could have raised questions over where Barco currently sits in the hierarchy, particularly with Moises Caicedo unavailable.
Alonso, however, insists the midfielder should remain patient.
“It’s just three games in the Premier League and one game in the cup we’ve had, so it’s still early days for everything,” he said.
“There will be chances for everyone.”
Leeds gives Barco another opportunity
Wednesday therefore looks like another important night in Barco’s early Chelsea career.
Caicedo has been ruled out, while Jordan Henderson is also unavailable, reducing Alonso’s senior midfield options.

Romeo Lavia and James remain options in midfield, while Gusto has also been used centrally under Alonso.
Barco nevertheless has something those players do not: a strong 90-minute performance in this competition already behind him.
Alonso says the Argentina international understands the competition he faces and is “ready for the challenge”.
Another chance against Leeds would give Barco the opportunity to prove it.
