Defense and special teams can be one of the most matchup-dependent positions in fantasy football, making Week 1 especially important for managers who waited on the position during their drafts.

These rankings prioritize matchup, sack potential, turnover upside, and the expected scoring environment.

Week 1 D/ST Sleepers

Tennessee Titans

The Titans are my No. 1 D/ST sleeper. They're rostered in far fewer leagues than the elite defenses, yet they have one of the best Week 1 matchups against the Jets.

Las Vegas Raiders

The Raiders are another excellent matchup-based sleeper. Miami enters Week 1 with significant quarterback uncertainty with Malik Willis, and Las Vegas gets the benefit of playing at home.

Week 1 D/ST Busts

San Francisco 49ers

The 49ers remain a talented real-life defense, but this is a difficult fantasy matchup. Facing the Rams on the road lowers the floor more than San Francisco's name recognition might suggest. I would look for a better Week 1 streaming option.

New Orleans Saints

New Orleans is one of the defenses I'd avoid starting if possible. Detroit's offense should create plenty of scoring opportunities, and the Saints could struggle to generate enough sacks and turnovers to offset points allowed.
