Liverpool hero Luis Garcia has opened up on why he felt compelled to leave Anfield in 2007, admitting the lure of returning to Atletico Madrid was simply too strong to resist. The Spaniard played a central role in helping Rafa Benitez's side claim the Champions League trophy before eventually deciding the time was right to head back home.
The 48-year-old will no doubt be watching with great interest on Wednesday as Liverpool welcome Atleti to Anfield for their opening Champions League league phase fixture.
Back in 2005, Garcia etched his name into club history by netting in three knockout rounds. Most memorable was his controversial semi-final goal against Chelsea, as the Reds journeyed to Istanbul and clinched the trophy in extraordinary circumstances.
While new Liverpool boss Andoni Iraola will be hoping to guide the club to a seventh European crown this season, Atleti are still waiting for their maiden triumph in the competition. Yet that was far from enough to put Garcia off making the switch nearly two decades ago.
The winger had previously spent the 2002/03 season with Atletico before heading back to Barcelona, where he attracted Liverpool's interest. In the end, the prospect of returning to the Madrid outfit proved impossible for the Spain international to resist.
"I could have stayed or I could return to Spain," Garcia explained upon leaving Liverpool in 2007. "I have made a decision which I believe is the right one. I simply couldn't reject the offer when given the opportunity to return to Atletico.

"It was a personal decision. Liverpool are one of the best clubs in the world. I spent three great years at Liverpool but it was time to consider my future.
Liverpool has been very important in my career and I will never forget my time there. Their fans are amazing, they supported me since my arrival, in good and bad times. I tried to do the best I could to repay their trust but nothing I can do can ever repay their unconditional support."
Garcia netted numerous crucial goals across his 122 outings for Liverpool. Amongst them was his spectacular effort in the FA Cup semi-final 2-1 victory over Chelsea, which left goalkeeper Carlo Cudicini helpless. Yet he was ruled out of the memorable final against West Ham United.
The Spanish forward had been dismissed in a league fixture against the Hammers for elbowing Hayden Mullins, who also received a ban for his response.
A heroic double from Steven Gerrard enabled Liverpool to fight back to 3-3 and secure the trophy on penalties, but Garcia was left with the greatest disappointment from his spell at the club.

"We won the Champions League and later the FA Cup – unfortunately I missed the final, which is something that I still regret," he told the club's website in 2023.
"That was a difficult experience for me but if you're intelligent you learn from your mistakes, and I made a pretty big one getting sent off in the build-up to that game.
"I scored in the semi-final, though, and it was against Chelsea again. So that is a memory I can look back on proudly. When I do talks now and clinics with young kids I always refer to that experience. You can never lose your cool. It was very out of character for me."
