π° News we're reading
1. Rams Are The Home Team In Australia, But Melbourne Seems To Prefer The 49ers (patch.com) β Los Angeles football fans are watching their Rams give up a true home-field feel as they host the 49ers in the NFL's first regular-season game in Australia, where Melbourne crowds seem to be siding with San Francisco. Despite years of Rams marketing and local events, Australian media say the 49ers' early arrival and fan outreach may turn this "home" game into a de facto road contest for LA.
2. AISFF Puts Emerging Filmmakers Center Stage (latinheat.com) β Los Angeles film lovers can catch 46 short films from 30 countries when the American International Short Film Festival returns to City Club Los Angeles from September 14β17. Alongside screenings, the four-day event features industry panels, networking, live music, fashion, burlesque, and a partnership with the Alliance of Women Directors, with tickets and schedules available now at AISFFLA.org.
3. LA County Jail Safety Checks Flagged in More Than 100 Cases as Latinos Account for 43% of Recent Deaths (parriva.com) β Los Angeles County residents are being warned that jail safety checks often fall short when supervisors aren't watching, according to a new Inspector General report reviewing 253 in-custody deaths. The findings highlight inconsistent monitoring at Men's Central Jail and Twin Towers, ongoing reforms ordered by the Board of Supervisors, and why Latino families are especially affected as they track loved ones' safety behind bars.
4. New TSA Program Allows Non-Passengers Past Airport Security (ntd.com) β Los Angeles travelers with TSA PreCheck can now use a new "Gateside by TSA PreCheck" program at LAX to escort loved ones to the gate, meet friends during layovers, or enjoy shops and restaurants without a ticket. Approved visitors apply online in advance, pass standard security in the PreCheck lane, and receive same-day terminal access while still following all screening rules.
5. Recipients of the John W. Baldwin Post-Doctoral Fellowship (ucla.edu) β UCLA's Los Angelesβbased CMRS Center for Early Global Studies has named Basil Price as the first John W. Baldwin Postdoctoral Fellow, supporting his research on medieval Icelandic sagas through 2026. The center, located at Royce Hall, also highlights its commitment to acknowledging the Gabrielino/Tongva peoples as traditional caretakers of the Los Angeles basin and Southern Channel Islands.

Armenian Americans Say Los Angeles County Failed to Turn Anti-Hate Rhetoric Into Action βSamantha Krause Read on Patch
While walking around The Grove, I stopped to take this photo.
It made me think about first impressions. Our eyes and minds often make quick decisions about people, places, and situations based on what stands⦠(Nextdoor East Washington Blvd)
While this warm, humid rainstorm may have cleaned our streets, it has also created PERFECT breeding conditions for mosquitoes.
Please, neighbors, make an effort to check for and clear ANY STANDING WATER. If the water is there, mosquitoes will breed, and ruin our good time⦠(Nextdoor Silver Lake Reservoir)
