Everton free-agent striker options shrink as expensive decision looms

The list of free-agent strikers available to Everton is beginning to shrink, leaving David Moyes with an increasingly awkward decision.

Moyes confirmed last week that the Toffees were looking at the free-agent market after Deadline Day left Thierno Barry as his only recognised senior No.9.

Since then, plenty of names have been thrown into the mix. Some are already disappearing.

Everton left with potentially expensive options

Jamie Vardy, who was linked with Everton last week, has joined Burnley, while Jordan Ayew has now signed for Sheffield United. That takes two possible solutions off the board.

The intriguing part is that some of the remaining options could require Everton to make a considerably bigger financial commitment.

Mauro Icardi is reportedly being considered by Everton after initially being offered to the club. There is no suggestion yet of talks or an offer, but his goalscoring record makes him an interesting option.

Anthony Martial is another. As we reported earlier today, the former Manchester United striker is said to be open to joining Everton, although wages are reportedly proving problematic.

Danny Ings and Joselu are among the other experienced forwards still without clubs, but there is currently no indication Everton are moving for either. So the free-agent question facing Moyes is changing slightly.

The pool is getting smaller. Of the players Everton have been linked with, Martial and Icardi could prove expensive options, but arguably ones with greater upside if either can rediscover his best form.

Everton can wait until January. The risk, of course, is leaving Barry to carry the load until then.
