Jamie Carragher has appeared to poke fun at his own financial situation, including the possibility of bankruptcy, as the former Liverpool star discussed the Champions League

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher seemingly joked about his own financial situation when discussing the fortunes of clubs in the Champions League this season.
It comes as the player-turned-pundit has faced some potential bother with taxes back in the UK, as it was recently revealed that the 48-year-old could be declared bankrupt due to the amount that is owed.
The unpaid tax bill is claimed to be in the region of £700,000 [$948.8 million] and £800,000 [$1.08 million], with the star being served with a bankruptcy petition as a result. It follows a situation that impacted around 200 former Premier League footballers who were victims of a tax scheme promoted by the UK government in the 1990s.
Many of those affected were related to investment in film-making, thanks to the tax scheme called "sideways relief", which led players and independent financial advisors to invest in the industry, along with a few others, only to be hit with a tax bill later down the line for money they didn't have.
Carragher is among those who have seemingly been impacted since, and while plenty has circulated about his financial situation, the former Liverpool defender could still find a moment to joke about it.
Speaking live on CBS Sports about the Champions League, he said: "I think it's about time we saw Barcelona back in terms of competing where they should be, one of the best teams in the world, one of the biggest teams in the world. They've had their financial problems, haven't they?"
Carragher paused for a moment before saying, "Haven't we all," which led to plenty of laughs from Micah Richards and a knowing smile from the host, Kate Abdo.

While there have been concerns over Carragher's finances, a spokesperson for the Liverpool legend assured that the situation will be dealt with soon.
Speaking to the Liverpool Echo last month, they said: "This is a private tax matter that should have been resolved sooner, and the appropriate steps are being taken today to settle it. It is understood that the matter will not proceed any further, and will be resolved imminently.”
While that continues to rumble in the background, Carragher is continuing his work as a pundit, featuring predominantly in the UK on Sky Sports, while he is on US broadcast with CBS Sports for the Champions League.
The former Liverpool star has become one of the leading voices in the UK on television, while he also regularly writes a column in the newspaper The Telegraph, continuing his work away from the pitch.
While it remains to be seen how the financial situation will be resolved for Carragher, it's clear that it hasn't impacted his ability to continue offering insight in his post-playing career.
