Liverpool “like” Roma and France midfielder Manu Kone and view him as one of their “potential future options”, according to reliable journalist David Ornstein.
There was plenty of surprise at the Reds not making a single midfield signing during the summer transfer window, putting pressure on key men staying fit.
There is also now more dependence on Trey Nyoni stepping up as a regular at senior level, which is something he has done impressively in the early weeks of the season.
Kone was linked with a move to Liverpool during the summer, as well as back in 2023 when Jurgen Klopp was in charge, but once again, a deal for the Frenchman didn’t materialise.
Writing in a Q&A for The Athletic, Ornstein discussed Liverpool’s interest in Kone, saying he remains a target, amid interest from Premier League rivals Chelsea:
“Manu Kone from Roma. He came very close to joining Chelsea before they pivoted to Camara. I think Liverpool like him as well as one of their potential future options.
“Liverpool would have had to look at options, even though they were only going to sign a midfielder, in spite of Curtis Jones leaving, if a further departure occurred. Camara was one option.
“I think there’s interest in Kone of Roma, and they’ll have other options as well. Don’t forget they’ve got Trey Nyoni there, who’s really impressing.”
Liverpool should continue to monitor Manu Kone
Liverpool are still crying out for a more naturally defence-minded midfielder in their squad, with their current options generally more attacking in nature, apart from Nyoni.
In Kone, the Reds would be signing a proven top-level player – one who was praised by Gian Piero Gasperini for his performances at the 2026 World Cup:
“He’s having a great World Cup. He didn’t play with the France national team last year, but now he’s been able to claim a starting spot. It shows his potential and the work he’s put in.”
Monaco’s Lamine Camara should arguably be looked at as Liverpool’s No.1 midfield target, possibly even in January, but Kone is a great option in his own right.
The 25-year-old has already averaged two tackles per game across three Serie A appearances this season, as well as completing 90.9% of his passes, and he could add so much in the middle of the park for Andoni Iraola.
