A few days ago we were all caught by surprise when the Dallas Cowboys announced that Tyler Smith [would miss somewhere between 4-6 weeks](/dallas-cowboys-injuries/216946/starting-left-guard-tyler-smith-out-4-6-weeks-thumb-injury) with a thumb injury that requires surgery.
It was a matter of time until the Cowboys formally placed Smith on injured reserve and brought in someone to fill that spot on the roster. That happened on Wednesday morning when it was reported that the team is elevating Nick Leverett from the practice squad.
This was always the most logical next step for the Cowboys as it gives them the most depth relative to the players they currently have in tow. [T.J. Bass is going to slot in at Smith’s actual spot](/dallas-cowboys-injuries/216959/t-j-bass-stats-replacing-tyler-smith) while he is out, but you have to have bodies as evidenced by this whole story.
The Cowboys do now have an open spot on their practice squad so we will see what they do with that.
