Enzo Maresca and his Manchester City players will not only be hoping to continue their winning start to the Premier League campaign this weekend, but also build upon an impressive outing in European competition on Tuesday night.
Going into the clash on the continent off the back of a 1-0 win over Coventry City last time out in the English top-flight, an Erling Haaland brace at Estadio do Dragao ensured a 0-2 win over Portuguese champions FC Porto.
It was a first win for City in the latest edition of the Champions League, and a league phase schedule that also features hugely challenging ties against the likes of Paris Saint-Germain at home, and FC Barcelona at Camp Nou in December.
Before the next European clash against the reigning holders of the tournament in PSG in mid-October, there is plenty of English football to be played including match-ups against Liverpool at Anfield and Norwich City in the third round of the Carabao Cup.
But before then, it's time for the first Manchester derby of the Enzo Maresca era, as Pep Guardiola's successor goes up against his cross-town counterpart in Michael Carrick on Sunday afternoon.
And ahead of the meeting between Manchester United and Manchester City, the Premier League have now announced the list of match officials to oversee proceedings at Old Trafford!
Match Referee
Looking ahead to the latest edition of the Manchester derby, the Premier League have confirmed Michael Oliver has been appointed into the role of match referee for the clash at Old Trafford.
The 41-year-old will be taking charge of his seventh match of the 2026/27 season across competitions, having overseen fixtures in the Premier League, UEFA Champions League, and the Champions League's qualification phase.
Oliver will be coming into the Old Trafford fixture off the back of a blockbuster tie in European competition on Tuesday night, having officiated Real Madrid's 2-1 win over Inter at the Bernabeu in the Spanish capital.
Manchester City are Michael Oliver's second-most officiated team in his professional career, having overseen the Sky Blues on 66 occasions prior to the weekend's clash; 46 of those games have resulted in a City win, nine ending in a draw, and 11 being defeats.
Over the course of the 66 matches officiated by Michael Oliver, Manchester City have received a total of 101 yellow cards, one second yellow card dismissal and 12 penalties awarded in their favour.
The last time City had Oliver as their match referee came on Merseyside and the dramatic 3-3 draw with Everton at the Hill Dickinson Stadium on matchday 35 of the 2025/26 Premier League season.
Assistant Referees
Joining Michael Oliver out on the pitch at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon will be an assistant referee pairing of Stuart Burt and Tim Wood, the Premier League have confirmed.
Video Assistant Referees
Overseeing events between Manchester United and Manchester City from the VAR Hub at Stockley Park this weekend will be referee Matt Donohue as the game's Video Assistant Referee, alongside the appointed Assistant Video Assistant Referee Blake Antrobus.
Fourth Official
Standing between the two Old Trafford dugouts and managing affairs concerning Manchester United's Michael Carrick and Manchester City's Enzo Maresca will be referee Paul Tierney - the appointed fourth official for the game.
