Danny Welbeck has spoken of his respect for Chelsea, describing his summer switch to Stamford Bridge as a privilege and an honour. He joined from Brighton and Hove Albion on 1 August 2026 on a contract running until summer 2028.
The signing was a stark departure from the recruitment orthodoxy Chelsea have followed since the BlueCo takeover of 2022, a policy that heavily favoured players in their early twenties. Welbeck, who takes the number 18 shirt, joined for a reported fee in the region of £5 million as Xabi Alonso sought more balance in a squad that finished tenth last season. Jordan Henderson and Maxence Lacroix were signed for similar reasons as additions to much more expensive signings like Morgan Rogers.
Welbeck said:
“You correlate Chelsea and winning in the same bracket. So for me to come here, to a big club, and have the opportunity to try and produce something special here… it’s a privilege and an honour.”
Welbeck made 400 Premier League appearances before joining the West Londoners, winning the title at Manchester United and lifting the FA Cup at Arsenal. He also earned 42 caps for England, scoring 16 goals in an international career spanning eight years.
With 26 Premier League goals in his last two seasons at Brighton, the deal made a curious sort of internal sense given his productivity on the south coast. After six years and more than 200 appearances, he left as the Seagulls’ all-time top scorer in the competition.

Welbeck missed the opening weekend win at Fulham, injured, but made his competitive debut with a statement performance. The forward broke a stubborn deadlock to head home Malo Gusto’s delivery in Chelsea’s 2-0 Carabao Cup second-round victory over Luton Town on 27 August.
He then came on as a substitute in the 87th minute of Chelsea’s 2-1 defeat at Arsenal – their first loss of the season. The Blues remain fourth in the Premier League, three points behind joint leaders Arsenal and Manchester City.
Wednesday evening sees Chelsea continue their Carabao Cup campaign with a third-round tie against Leeds United, before they host newly promoted Hull City in the league on Saturday. Alonso has a busier schedule and Welbeck will look to get more minutes in both games. His ability to hold up the ball and build combinations should give Chelsea’s younger attackers much more room to operate.
