The lack of continental football makes that congestion appreciably worse for the manager and his contingent. Chelsea finished the 2025/26 season on 52 points, outside the qualification spots, meaning that, for the third time in three decades, they will not have European commitments. The smaller fixture list means less rotation, and historically, teams that don’t have to travel midweek generally rely on a tight core of regulars.
So domestic cups take on undue importance for those waiting for meaningful exposure. A long run would give Estevao, Quenda, Gittens and Anselmino the competitive rhythm that the training ground diligence cannot replicate. The immediate test is the Leeds tie at Stamford Bridge, and victory keeps alive a route to a trophy that grants the winner entry to the Conference League play-off round. And then it’s Saturday afternoon, and Alonso’s eyeing up Hull City in the Premier League.
