Cody Gakpo will miss Liverpool's Champions League opener with Atletico Madrid through injury, Andoni Iraola has confirmed. The Dutchman has started the season in fantastic fashion, registering four goal contributions in Liverpool's opening three Premier League matches this term.
There had been doubts over his future, with Tottenham and Manchester City having been heavily linked with the ex-PSV forward. It was even reported that Gakpo had decided on a move to City in the final week of the window, but Liverpool didn't sanction a sale because they weren't able to source a replacement.
And ahead of tonight's match against La Liga side Atletico Madrid, Iraola confirmed he wouldn't be involved in the match due to an injury problem. Speaking to TNT Sports, he remarked: "Cody finished the game the other day against Ipswich with some adductor issues. Nothing specific, not a proper injury, but we didn’t want to risk him."
