Reggie Watson has been handed his competitive Chelsea debut at just 16 after Xabi Alonso named the midfielder in his starting XI against Leeds United.
Watson starts alongside Valentin Barco in Chelsea’s Carabao Cup third-round tie at Stamford Bridge, completing a remarkable rise from academy football into Alonso’s senior side.
The midfielder was included when Chelsea announced their 12 new first-year academy scholars in July.
Barely two months later, he is starting a competitive first-team match.

Who is Reggie Watson?
Watson joined Chelsea from Crystal Palace during his Under-15 season and has developed primarily as a central midfielder.
Chelsea’s official academy introduction describes him as a composed midfielder who became a regular for the Under-18s last season.
He helped that side win both the Southern and National Premier League titles, while also featuring in the FA Youth Cup and UEFA Youth League.
Watson was already playing above his age group before this season, making appearances for the Under-21s while still a schoolboy. He has also represented England at youth level.
His pathway has accelerated significantly since Alonso arrived.
ReadChelsea reported Watson’s inclusion in Chelsea’s pre-season tour squad, with the teenager subsequently receiving substantial exposure alongside senior players.
Watson was the only Chelsea player to start and finish the 6-4 pre-season victory over Western Sydney Wanderers.
Reflecting on that opportunity in his first-tour diary with Chelsea, Watson explained how focused he had been on proving himself despite being only 16.
Watson has already impressed Alonso
Watson continued to receive first-team opportunities throughout the summer.
He was involved as Alonso assessed his younger players during Chelsea’s tour, with ReadChelsea identifying Watson as one of the winners from the 3-3 draw with Johor Darul Ta’zim.
The teenager looked comfortable against senior opposition and showed the competitive edge which has increasingly become part of his reputation.
His academy performances have strengthened the case for further opportunities.
Watson scored in Chelsea’s opening Premier League 2 game against Bournemouth before finding the net again during the dramatic win over West Ham.

Alonso makes significant call against Leeds
Watson could easily have remained an academy player gaining experience around the senior squad this season.
Instead, Alonso has trusted him from the start of a competitive knockout tie.
Chelsea are without Moises Caicedo and Jordan Henderson, but Alonso had alternative options available.
Reece James and Malo Gusto have both played centrally, while several experienced players are named among tonight’s substitutes.
Selecting Watson therefore looks like more than simply filling a space.
It is an opportunity earned by a player who has impressed throughout the summer and carried that form back into academy football.

Watson now has an opportunity to demonstrate the other side of the academy model.
At 16, his Chelsea career is only beginning.
