Marcos Llorente scored for a third consecutive game at Anfield to give his Atletico Madrid side a 17th-minute 1-0 against Liverpool on Wednesday in the Champions League.
The versatile Spanish midfielder famously scored twice in extra time against the Reds at Anfield in the 2019/20 Champions League Round of 16, eliminating Liverpool. Days later, the world stopped due to COVID-19.
Llorente named his dog Anfield to celebrate the occasion. On his next visit to the famous English ground in 2025, the Atletico player scored two more goals. These came in a 3-2 loss thanks to a late Virgil van Dijk winner.
Half of his 10 career Champions League goals have not only come against Liverpool but at Anfield. Llorente isn't a prolific goalscorer: half of his 2025/26 goal tally came in the one fixture against the Reds. He didn't score all season in La Liga, and his goal on Wednesday was his first of the campaign.
The Spanish 31-year-old lined up at right-wing-back for coach Diego Simeone on Wednesday. He's typically used all over the formation.
Llorente was a Real Madrid youth player — two of his grandfathers won Champions League titles with Los Blancos — before he moved to Atletico Madrid in 2019 on a permanent transfer.
The one-time La Liga Champion was named to the league's Team of the Season last year after a strong year with Los Rojiblancos. Llorente's strong play earned him another shot with the Spanish national team, and he made three appearances in his nation's road to World Cup glory.
