Liverpool vs Atletico Madrid delivered another dramatic Champions League encounter. Here are the key talking points from Anfield.
Against the wily Diego Simeone, this was Andoni Iraola’s first Champions League encounter. On this occasion, experience counted for little though, as Liverpool came from behind to earn all three points in the league phase.
The Spaniards did take the lead when Marcos Llorente netted the opening goal in the 17th minute, exposing Liverpool’s high line and skipping in behind to silence Anfield.
But the six-time European champions responded via Dominik Szoboszlai, who restored parity just before half-time when Ronald Araujo flicked the ball into his path and he poked an awkward shot into the net.
After the break, Liverpool started quickest and took the lead when Alexis Mac Allister rocketed the ball past Jan Oblak with his left foot from the edge of the box. After the noise that accompanied his press conference comments before the game, Mac Allister will be delighted to make headlines for the right reasons.
Atleti managed little in the latter stages as Liverpool held on to a relatively comfortable win. Here are the main talking points from Liverpool vs Atletico Madrid, and the Reds 2-1 win over Simeone’s side.

Barcola’s mixed Anfield debut
All eyes were on Bradley Barcola as the £123 million man made his first Liverpool start on Tuesday. The Frenchman came off the bench for the final half an hour of Friday’s win against Ipswich Town, but under the lights at Anfield, this was a first real chance to demonstrate his capabilities.
In truth, it was a slightly underwhelming display from Barcola, who started on the right wing, while Rio Ngumoha lined up on the left and became Liverpool’s youngest-ever Champions League starter.
Twice Barcola tested Oblak in the away goal with side-foot efforts, the second of which came moments before Szoboszlai’s goal. And in the 48th minute, when fed the ball via a rapid Liverpool breakaway, the ex-Paris Saint-Germain slotted the ball wide from a one-on-one opening. He will be disappointed his night ended without his name being included on the scoresheet.
Yet, even more frustratingly, Barcola appeared to pick up an injury just before the hour mark, and was immediately replaced by Jeremie Frimpong. Barcola pulled up after making a darting run and immediately appeared to be in pain. Liverpool fans will hope the issue proves not to be serious.

Another Injury Setback
The fitness levels of Iraola’s wingers has suddenly become a pertinent subject. Barcola’s start came at the expense of Cody Gakpo, who missed the game with a minor knock. The in-form Dutchman registered two assists at Portman Road last week, but felt a muscular pain after the match.
“Cody finished the game the other day against Ipswich with some adductor issues [on] both sides, nothing specific, not a proper injury,” Iraola told TNT Sports before the game.
“But we don’t want to risk him. It makes sense. He takes a rest and hopefully we can recover him, if not for the weekend, for the next one. I think even for the weekend he has a chance to be there.”
Llorent Strikes Again
Llorente’s remarkable scoring exploits against Liverpool continued on Tuesday. He netted the opener when he sprung the hosts’ offside trap and slotted calmly beyond Alisson. Incredibly, that was his fifth Champions League goal against Liverpool – for context, only one opposition side have actually managed a higher tally at the ground (Real Madrid, 8).
Llorente, whose penchant for netting on Merseyside resulted in him naming his dog ‘Anfield’, has only scored 10 altogether in the Champions League, while his five goals and one assist against Liverpool is the joint-highest goal involvement against a single side.
The Last Word: Tactical showdown
After the systemic problems that plagued Iraola’s first Liverpool game – the 2-2 draw at Newcastle United – the Spaniard’s system has looked more convincing in the two games since.
But the Atleti game was another reminder of the work that is required on the training ground. Liverpool were too open for large spells, especially for Llorente’s goal, while Julian Alvarez and Alex Baena also produced dangerous chances. There were simply too many gaps and Liverpool invited the opposition onto them.
Admittedly, that did result in several penetrative breaks from Iraola’s side. Szoboszlai won the ball and fed it to Isak to shoot inside the first 20 seconds, while a rapid transition in the 30th minute saw Florian Wirtz go close, before Barcola’s chance at the start of the second period. Ngumoha and Victor Munoz also enjoyed plenty of forays down the left flank.
Liverpool did exert more control in the second half, which was less frantic and open, and while this was an entertaining affair, there remain major issues with Iraola’s set-up.
