It sure does look like the Mavs are gonna build at Valley View.
Despite 9 out of 15 City Council members and a preponderance of city leadership ready to tear down City Hall and move, we can now say that it’s kind of unlikely that they’d be doing so for the Dallas Mavericks. We’re saying this again. Still.
This morning, the Mavericks told the Dallas Morning News that they’ve filed for a zoning change on 104 acres of the former Valley View Mall. “We are excited to announce the next step toward a new home in Dallas. Today, we have formally begun the zoning change process to pursue a new Dallas Mavericks arena and entertainment district at the former Valley View Mall site,” the team said in a statement to the News. “We look forward to working closely with the community as the process moves forward.”
The team entered an option agreement to purchase the land in June. With the zoning request, the Mavericks want to amend a planned development already in existence and create a subdistrict that would allow a sports and entertainment district. In June, we were able to deduce from the deal the team struck with one of the three owners of the Valley View land that the Mavericks are making nonrefundable option payments, and the current closing date is January 31, 2028 or 90 days after the entitlement period expires. An entitlement period is usually a time frame during a real estate purchase where the buyer has time to get any government approvals or zoning changes completed, which is where we are now.
