The [New England Patriots](https://nesn.com/new-england-patriots) will get their season started on Wednesday night, but that wasn't the focus over the last couple of weeks.
The Patriots and Christian Gonzalez were trying to work out a contract situation, which they finally resolved on Tuesday. The Patriots eventually reached an agreement on a four-year, $135 million deal, making him the highest-paid cornerback in the NFL.
It's very positive that this is done now, as the Patriots didn't want to take it into the regular season. There was always a slight worry that Gonzalez might not have played until he figured out his contract situation, so getting this out of the way now made sense for both sides.
However, according to the latest report from Adam Schefter, questions have come up over the past couple of days about whether something would get done, and the Patriots even considered pulling their offer.
“It was strained enough at one point that there were conversations in the Patriots organization in recent days about whether or not they should pull the offer,” Schefter [said](https://www.boston.com/sports/new-england-patriots/2026/09/08/new-england-patriots-christian-gonzalez-nfl-football-adam-schefter/), per Boston.com. “This was not a simple deal to get done; we heard on August 25th, Christian Gonzalez complain about the offer.
“But the offer pretty much was the same until the end, when they upped the average per year and basically agreed to the deal while they were in the air.”
It sounds crazy to say that the Patriots would have allowed this to leak into the regular season, but if Gonzalez wasn't willing to work with them, there really isn't much that Robert Kraft and the front office could have done.
Instead, that didn't end up being a problem, and Gonzalez will be ready to go on Wednesday night against the Seattle Seahawks in what should be one of the best games of Week 1.
