Among the injuries the Boston Red Sox have dealt with this year, losing Willson Contreras a couple of weeks ago, last appearing in a game on August 30 against the New York Yankees, is at the top of that list.
Contreras, the big-time right-handed slugger, has been one of the better offensive players in the American League throughout the campaign.
He's blasted 26 home runs and has driven in 79 RBIs, proving to be a threat in the middle of Boston's lineup. With the postseason near, there's absolutely no debate that the Red Sox need him if they're going to be the type of team that everybody expects them to be come October.
While it remains uncertain when he'll return from the IL, the latest reports suggest he could be back on Friday. The Red Sox will take on the Kansas City Royals in Boston on Friday night.
“He’s going to play at least Friday and we’ll check in with him after that,” interim Tracy said Wednesday before the team's series finale against the Angels, H/T FOX. “He just wants to get on his feet. He’s been down for a while; just to get on his feet and, actually, see some pitching, move around at first, maybe get on base.”
Contreras looked very healthy in a video that surfaced on social media Tuesday, showing him running the bases.
While that doesn't mean everything, it's a good sign he could return sometime in the near future. The rehab assignment part shouldn't be too big of a deal, either.
He's a guy who has been in this league for long enough to know how his body feels, so if he wanted a rehab assignment, it shouldn't be the end of the world.
