The Seattle Seahawks beat New England Patriots 13-10 in the first game of the NFL season. Starting Seahawks’ quarterback Sam Darnold went down with an injury in the first quarter and the Patriots had a 10-point lead late in the third quarter, but Drake Maye threw three interceptions in the fourth quarter.
Maye completed 23-of-33 passes for 178 yards and was sacked three times as the Patriots started the season with a loss. Maye, who has a reputation for being a great deep ball thrower, was 0-for-4 on throws 20 or more yards down the field including two of those interceptions. He was thoroughly outplayed by Drew Lock, who wasn’t even supposed to play.
It was also the third multiple-interception game of Maye’s career. Last year he threw eight total. And he’d never thrown three.
With that in mind, here’s a look at all three of Maye’s picks.

The first interception came early in the fourth when he threw the ball up to Romeo Doubs and it was tipped before being intercepted by Nehemiah Pritchett. Five plays later the Seahawks tied the game with a Jaxon Smith-Njigba touchdown.
On the next possession Maye did it again.

This time he threw the ball up in the middle of the field and it was picked off by Julian Love. When NBC’s Jason Garrett saw the highlight after the game he was not impressed. Garrett said, “If you did that as a junior high quarterback, the coach wouldn’t be happy.”

Finally, the real backbreaker came in the final seconds. Trailing by three, the Patriots could send it to overtime with a field goal. Instead, Maye threw it up again. And Josh Jobe intercepted the pass and got two feet down in the end zone.
Just don’t throw any of those and the Patriots send it to overtime. Or maybe even win in regulation. Now Maye and the Patriots will have to hear about it until they take on the Steelers 10 days from now.
