The Seattle Seahawks held off the New England Patriots 13-10 in a Super Bowl LX rematch to kick off the 2026 NFL season on Wednesday night.
With 3rd-and-5 at the Seattle 16-yard line and 26 seconds remaining, New England was in position to potentially take the lead, or at the very least tie the game in the final seconds. But Patriots quarterback Drake Maye threw a pass that was picked off in the end zone by Seahawks cornerback Josh Jobe.
There are interceptions, and there are inexplicable interceptions. This would certainly qualify as the latter.
NBC announcers Mike Tirico and Cris Collinsworth were quite honest about it on the broadcast.
Tirico called Maye’s interception “A TERRIBLE DECISION” while delivering play-by-play.
Mike Tirico: “A TERRIBLE DECISION!”
Cris Collinsworth: “I can’t believe that throw… Wow. I mean, there are certain things you just can’t do or try when you have field goal range and overtime in your grasp. And that was the play… Ouch.” pic.twitter.com/oZuIRuNN2n

Collinsworth remained silent for a full minute before offering his thoughts.
“I can’t believe that throw,” a stunned Collinsworth said.
“Wow,” Collinsworth continued, after being silent for another 30-plus seconds. “I mean, there are certain things you just can’t do or try when you have field goal range and overtime in your grasp. And that was the play. Off his back foot, fading away, and didn’t get it out of bounds. Ouch.”
“The last play was disastrous for Drake Maye,” Tirico added.
New England led 10-0 late into the third quarter. Additionally, Seattle starting quarterback Sam Darnold suffered a hip injury that forced him to leave the game in the first quarter, and he was replaced by Drew Lock.
Lock connected with Seahawks star wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba for a 45-yard touchdown on a short pass on 4th-and-1 in the fourth quarter. Jason Myers would later kick what would serve as the game-winning field goal.
