Liverpool came back from a goal down to beat Atletico Madrid in their Champions League opener at Anfield.
The Reds were pegged back by Marco Llorente early on, but goals from Dominik Szoboszlai and Alexis Mac Allister helped them claim three key points.
Liverpool have now won twice in a row for the first time this season and will be eager to build on that momentum.
However, new Liverpool boss Andoni Iraola will be very worried about his rearguard and how they have performed in these early days.
While the Merseyside club is stacked up top and has options in midfield, the dearth of quality at the back is quite obvious.
The Spanish giants found plenty of joy, especially down the left through Milos Kerkez. He lost Llorente for Aletico’s goal. His spatial awareness is quite poor.
He did create a big chance and had some great moments, but his defensive lapses are too hard to ignore.
The 22-year-old tries hard, but he leaves huge gaps behind him that opponents are only too happy to exploit.
Former Tottenham Hotspur and Leeds United goalkeeper Paul Robinson said (via the BBC), ‘Kerkez is by no way the answer at left-back.’
Many fans expected the arrival of Iraola, his former manager, to signal a turnaround for the Hungarian after a difficult first season with Liverpool.
However, while he has improved, he is still not up to scratch. Kerkez has not proven he can be the long-term Andy Robertson replacement he is expected to be.
He suffered a hamstring injury and had to be taken off just before full-time, but it doesn’t look like anything serious heading into the weekend Premier League game.
The Reds will be hoping he picks up steam between now and the end of the season, or could face having to find serious competition for him in the transfer market.
Liverpool have Kostas Tsimikas to deputise for Kerkez, but if the pair do not raise their game, they might get upgraded.
