The Friedkin Group are reportedly acutely aware of supporter unrest at Everton, with fan anger capable of having an impact on decisions made by the club’s owners.
The relationship between TFG and Evertonians has come under increasing scrutiny following a chaotic end to the summer transfer window.
One of the biggest flashpoints surrounded Harrison Armstrong, with the Friedkins open to considering a potential £40m move to Nottingham Forest. Sources at Everton have stressed that no deal was agreed, but the possibility of the academy graduate leaving prompted a fierce response from supporters.
Friedkins ‘really aware’ of Everton fan anger
Mark Douglas, Northern Football Correspondent for The i Paper, has spoken to people who have worked closely with TFG about what makes the owners tick.
One source describes them as “emotional” about results and “quite demanding”, while saying they want to be popular with supporters and care about their reputation.
More tellingly, the source said: “They are really aware of fan upset and protests, and it definitely does have an impact on their decision-making.”
The Armstrong saga is clearly a case in point.
Douglas reports that, from TFG’s perspective, the sort of money being discussed for a player with only eight starts and no guarantee of regular first-team football was worthy of consideration.
Armstrong then played and performed well at Bournemouth, while Evertonians made no secret of what they thought about the prospect of losing one of the club’s brightest young players.
Douglas describes what followed as “a lesson to TFG”. The proposed sale was scrapped.
It doesn’t mean supporters will always get their way. But if the Friedkins were unsure before how Evertonians felt about Armstrong, they certainly knew by the end of it.
