David Ornstein Says Liverpool “Like” Midfielder Who “Came Very Close To Joining Chelsea” – It’s Not Camara

Liverpool have shown interest in Roma’s Manu Kone, according to The Athletic reporter David Ornstein.
The Reds have been linked with Monaco’s Lamine Camara as a potential future target. The Senegalese international was on the verge of joining Chelsea on Deadline Day before the deal collapsed, but Ornstein says that another midfielder who could have moved to Stamford Bridge is also on the Merseyside club’s shortlist:
“He [Kone] came very close to joining Chelsea before they pivoted to Camara. And let’s see what position Roma are in at the time in terms of European football and financial compliance (come the winter window).”
“He’s a player that is so highly rated. We saw him starting a lot for France at the World Cup, and he was looked at very heavily by Manchester United, Chelsea… I think Liverpool like him as well as one of their potential future options.”
Roma were willing to sell Kone
As Ornstein mentions, Roma are not in the best position with regards to UEFA Financial Fair Play. They agreed a settlement with the European governing body several years ago after breaking regulations, so any further breaches would be very problematic.
For that reason, the Giallorossi were looking to offload Kone, but they ultimately blocked his switch to Chelsea after the intervention of their head coach Gian Piero Gasperini. The situation may, though, change in the New Year.

Liverpool would have to sell Mac Allister first
It looks like any move for a midfielder will be dependent on another departure. Speaking before the game against Atletico Madrid, Alexis Mac Allister revealed that the club have not offered him a new contract.
With the Argentinian’s current deal set to expire in 2028, it seems certain that he will depart Anfield at some point next year. When that happens, a move could be made for either Kone or Camara.
