Barcelona Defer £69m Gordon Fee to Newcastle United
FC Barcelona have agreed a deal with Newcastle United to defer their first payment for winger Anthony Gordon, according to Chronicle Live.
Barça bought Gordon for £69m in May this year, handing him a five-year contract.
Now they want to restructure the agreed deal by delaying the first instalment on the payment until next year, because of financial pressures arising from their transfer debts.
Barça and Newcastle “Change Schedule” for Payments
As with the majority of transfers, Barça agreed to pay the £69m in instalments.
Chronicle Live says this would be done in two instalments: a “short-term payment” of £18.88m, followed by the rest in a later payment.
Barça and Newcastle have agreed to “change the schedule” on this, with the first payment now due in June 2027, a year later than planned.
Deferring the payment gives Barça respite from their mounting transfer debts which, according to Chronicle Live, stand at £77.3m for this transfer window.
The La Liga club spent £158m on signings this summer. They brought in Rodri from Manchester City and Gabriel Jesus from Arsenal amongst others.
Newcastle sold Sandro Tonali to Tottenham Hotspur for nearly £100m and Bruno Guimarães to Arsenal for £75m, so there is less pressure to recoup the Gordon money straight away.
Gordon Is a “Perfect Fit” for Barça
Gordon has made a great start to life in Catalonia.
He has made four assists in his first four La Liga games, silencing the doubters who were unsure about the move.
The former Newcastle winger has been such a hit that Spanish media outlet El Desmarque described him as a “perfect fit” for the Barça team.
Barcelona currently sit top of La Liga with 12 points, after an unbeaten start to the season.
They also got off to a strong start in the Champions League, beating Feyenoord 5-1 at Camp Nou.
