Chelsea have already produced 26 goals at either end across their opening five competitive matches, but Xabi Alonso is not entirely comfortable with the chaos.
The Blues have scored 16 and conceded 10 during an extraordinary start to the campaign, culminating in Wednesday night’s 6-3 Carabao Cup victory over Leeds United.
Chelsea recovered from 2-0 down at Stamford Bridge, with four half-time substitutions completely changing the game.
The comeback highlighted the attacking quality available to Alonso. It also exposed the problem he now wants to solve.
Chelsea need greater balance.

Only the Carabao Cup victory over Luton has ended with a clean sheet.
The warning signs were already evident during Chelsea’s 4-3 win over Brighton, when Alonso’s side established a commanding advantage before eventually needing to survive a late Brighton response.
Chelsea again showed their attacking ceiling against Leeds.
Cole Palmer scored twice after being introduced at half-time, while Morgan Rogers produced three assists during a devastating second-half spell.

The concern is that Chelsea required that level of attacking firepower simply to regain control.
Alonso wants Chelsea to control matches differently
Alonso’s football has quickly produced exciting attacking combinations.
Cole Palmer, Rogers and Joao Pedro have already shown signs of developing dangerous relationships, while Pedro Neto and Estevao provide directness around them.
That attacking variety makes Chelsea difficult to contain once matches become stretched.
But open games also expose the other side of Alonso’s system.
Chelsea conceded three against Brighton, two against Arsenal and another three against Leeds.
Against Arsenal, the Blues took the lead after just 77 seconds through Rogers but were eventually beaten 2-1 as the champions gained greater control of the contest. Reuters’ report from the Emirates highlighted how Arsenal responded after Chelsea’s fast start and completed their own comeback.
That is why Alonso’s comments after Leeds matter.
He is not asking Chelsea to become less adventurous.
He wants a side capable of recognising when a match does not need to become a shootout.
