Rockets' Tari Eason Calls Out Trinity Tatum For Her Definition Of Success

Trinity Tatum and Bryce Alakai were crowned winners of season 8 of Love Island USA, and the two recently sat down for an interview with Flaunt Magazine. At one point, Tatum and Alakai, who won the $100,000 cash prize, were asked whether Love Island is a kind of new American Dream, and her response went viral.
“It’s such a full-circle moment,” Tatum said. “A year ago today, I was 21, working at Home Depot, having a mental crisis. I’d cry before going into work because I’d see people my age on social media on yachts, in high-rises, with all these bags and purses, and think, ‘What am I doing wrong? How am I going to get successful?’
“I was so miserable, still living with my mom,” Tatum continued. “And a year later, I’ve won a very popular love show; I have an amazing boyfriend, an amazing support system, and offers from people who didn’t even know I existed. It’s crazy. People I used to follow on Instagram and TikTok are now reaching out saying they love me, and I’m like, ‘You follow me?'”
This did not go down too well. People lamented that social media skews how younger generations perceive success, and Houston Rockets forward Tari Eason was among many who spoke out.

Social media has certainly become a double-edged sword. While it helps in many ways, it does not paint an accurate picture of reality. That, in turn, leads to insecurity.
The people you see on Instagram aboard yachts with all the fancy bags/purses in the world are the exceptions to the norm. Just because you aren’t in that position at the age of 21 and are working some small-time job doesn’t mean you’re a failure. You still have your whole life in front of you.
Also, being successful isn’t just about being on yachts and high-rises. There is so much more to life. Of course, there is nothing wrong with aiming for the top, but it usually takes a long time to get there. There is no need to get disheartened by comparing yourself to strangers on Instagram whose journeys you know nothing about. It’s simply not healthy. Focus internally and try to get better every day, and you will get far.
Getting back to Eason, who averaged 10.5 points, 6.3 rebounds, 1.5 assists, 1.2 steals, and 0.5 blocks per game in 2025-26, some argued he isn’t the right messenger. The Rockets had selected him with the No. 17 pick in the 2022 NBA Draft when he was 21 years old.
Eason also signed a five-year, $81.5 million deal in 2026 and is in a position that most can only dream of. The 25-year-old worked his socks off to get to where he is today, though, and as long as the message is the right one, nothing else really matters.
