The 26-year-old opened the scoring at the Estádio do Dragão in the 47th minute, heading home from Enzo Fernandez's cross to draw level with Tommy Johnson on 166 City goals. He then sealed the win in added time when Rayan Ait-Nouri picked him out, taking his tally to 167 and moving past Johnson into third on the all-time list.
Only Eric Brook, who netted 177 times for City between 1928-40, and club record holder Sergio Aguero, who finished his time at the Etihad Stadium with 260 goals, now sit ahead of him.
The goals also meant Haaland drew level with Aguero's club record of 36 UEFA Champions League goals for Manchester City. He has scored them in just 59 appearances in the competition, averaging exactly one goal per game.

Haaland's Record-Breaking Night at the Estádio do Dragão
The brace moved Haaland's total in Champions League group stages and league phases to 42 goals in just 39 appearances: the most of any player since he first entered the competition six seasons ago.
Fernandez provided the assist for the opener in his first Manchester City start, floating a cross from the left that Haaland met at the far post. The Norwegian had been denied on multiple occasions in the first half by Diogo Costa before finally breaking through City's evening-long dominance.
His second came from Ait-Nouri's delivery in the 91st minute, completing the scoring and securing a perfect start to City's Champions League campaign under Enzo Maresca.

Where Haaland Now Stands in the Record Books
Haaland's 167 City goals have been scored across five seasons at the club since his £51 million arrival from Borussia Dortmund in 2022. He joined as a 22-year-old and has broken or matched virtually every meaningful scoring benchmark at the club in the time since.
At 26, he sits 10 goals behind Eric Brook's mark of 177 - a tally that, at his current rate of scoring across all competitions, he could reach within the calendar year. Aguero's record of 260 remains the long-term target.
In the Champions League, his 59-goal haul in 59 games is one of the most remarkable statistical accomplishments in the competition's history. Only Kylian Mbappe has scored more than him in Europe's elite club competition since his arrival at the Etihad Stadium.
City resume their Champions League campaign against Paris Saint-Germain later in the league phase, with that fixture likely to provide another measuring stick for Haaland and the new-look side Maresca is building at the Etihad Stadium.
