Bradley Barcola limped off with an injury during his first home appearance for Liverpool. As per latest news, the Reds’ head coach Andoni Iraola has given an update around the winger’s fitness.

Bradley Barcola picks up injury on his home debut

Liverpool fans had waited all summer to see Bradley Barcola pull on the red shirt at Anfield. The winger also looked determined to reward that patience against Atletico Madrid in the Champions League on Wednesday night.

The French forward, who joined from Paris Saint-Germain, gave the Reds fans plenty to smile about in the opening hour. He created two clear chances, one denied by a smart save from Atleti goalkeeper Jan Oblak and another that slipped just wide after a clever run in behind the defense.

Then, just before the hour mark, Barcola pushed forward on a run toward goal and suddenly pulled up. He grabbed at his left calf before dropping to the turf in visible discomfort. The club’s medical staff rushed on to check the new signing. After a short spell of treatment, Barcola was able to walk off on his own. Victor Munoz replaced him for the remainder of the game as Andoni Iraola’s side held on to secure a key 2-1 win.

For a club that broke its transfer record to sign him, any scare involving Barcola was always going to dominate the headlines. This comes especially with a busy Premier League and UCL schedule still ahead this season.

Iraola plays down fears over Barcola

Speaking after the match, Iraola moved quickly to ease concerns. As reported by ESPN, the manager said: “It’s just cramp, there is no injury.” He pointed out that building up Barcola’s physical condition remains an ongoing project. This is given how little football the player had featured in before his move to Merseyside. Iraola noted that Barcola had barely trained with PSG during preseason. The winger managed only around thirty minutes of action in his final appearance before completing his switch to Liverpool.

The head coach added: “We don’t really know, or we didn’t know until now probably, how much he can play, because he hasn’t had any minutes in preseason for PSG.” That update from Iraola will be key as Liverpool manage Barcola’s workload carefully across a hectic fixture list this term.

Can Barcola fill the void left by Salah?

Despite the late withdrawal, there were plenty of promising signs from Barcola’s full home debut. Earlier this season, he needed only twenty six minutes off the bench against Ipswich Town to register one of the quickest sprint speeds recorded in the Premier League so far.

That kind of pace is exactly what Liverpool hoped to add after losing Mohamed Salah. The early signs suggest Barcola can offer a similar attacking spark once he reaches full match fitness. With careful management of his minutes, the Reds will hope the cramp scare proves a minor bump rather than the start of a longer fitness battle for their prized new forward.
