A.J. Brown’s run with the Patriots started on a sour note during Week 1 against the Seahawks. The receiver left the team's first game of the season with an ankle injury.
At the start of the third quarter, QB Drake Maye threw a pass to Brown. Seattle cornerback Nehemiah Pritchett knocked down the pass but landed on Brown's right ankle. He was in immediate pain but left the field without help.
Brown was then seen limping back to the locker room before undergoing an X-ray. He was ruled out for the rest of the game.
Brown’s stat line: Three catches for 26 yards. The Patriots lost to Seattle, 13-10.
The Patriots were hoping their star offseason pickup, a player they got in a trade from the Eagles in exchange for a 2027 fifth-round pick and a 2028 first-round pick, wouldn’t be out for long.
What is Brown’s status following his injury?
A.J. Brown injury update
Ian Rapoport reported that it’s believed Brown suffered a high-ankle sprain. This comes after X-rays were negative for a fracture.
It's not the first time Brown has been hurt, as he has an extensive injury history dating back to 2020. In the past, he’s injured his knees, including his right knee in 2024.
Brown will have an MRI on Sept. 10 to determine how much time he will miss. The Patriots’ next game won’t be until September 20 against the Steelers.
If Brown needs to miss significant time, receivers Romeo Doubs and Mack Hollins will likely take on more responsibility. There’s also Hunter Henry and Rhamondre Stevenson, the latter acting as a weapon in the running and passing game for New England against Seattle.
NESN will provide additional updates when available.
