Federico Chiesa could consider leaving in January if he finds it tough for minutes at Liverpool once he returns from injury, as per latest transfer news. The 28-year-old remains sidelined with an injury but could be back to training later this September.
Federico Chiesa faces uncertain Liverpool future
As reported by Football Insider, Chiesa will consider leaving the Reds if he does not get enough minutes under Andoni Iraola. The Italian was omitted from the Reds’ UCL squad for the second season in a row, with Wataru Endo. Chiesa is still recovering from a muscle injury. Iraola had added him in the Reds’ pre-season squad**,** but an injury disrupted those preparations. Despite links with a potential move back to Serie A, he ultimately stayed at Anfield.
The winger now faces an important few months. Chiesa wants to stay at Liverpool for now and fight for his place, but that could change if he remains on the edge of the squad. Out of all of Chiesa’s Premier League games, he only made one start last season under Arne Slot. He struggled to establish himself in the team despite making 36 appearances in all competitions. He finished the campaign with three goals and three assists.
The Italian was eventually added to Liverpool’s UCL squad during the knockout stages last season. However, his latest omission means he will again be unable to feature in the early stages of the competition.
Iraola has more attacking options
Chiesa’s place in the squad is less secure after Liverpool added more options in attack. Iraola has brought in Victor Munoz and Bradley Barcola in recent months. Both can play in wide areas, which adds more competition for places. With Mohamed Salah gone, Chiesa remains one of the only Liverpool players who can play on the right. But it is to be seen how often he will play once he returns to full fitness.
His time in English football has been tough since joining Liverpool from Juventus. He has not been a regular starter because of injuries and lack of opportunities. Chiesa has also been dropped from the Italian squad. His lastappearance for the Azzurri came at Euro 2024, highlighting how his lack of regular club football has affected his position at international level.
The winger will now hope that his return from injury gives him a chance to change the situation. If he can earn more minutes in the next few months, he could remain at Anfield beyond January. However, another period on the bench could push him towards a move.

Liverpool still want Minteh
Liverpool’s plans in the January transfer window could also decide Chiesa’s future. The club is still expected to look at adding more attacking depth to Iraola’s squad**.** Liverpool remain interested in Brighton winger Yankuba Minteh. They were already tracking him in the summer window and had two bids rejected by Brighton.
If the chance arises again in January, the Reds could come back with another approach**.** Minteh’s possible arrival would create even more competition for Chiesa. Liverpool already have a number of options across the attack and a further signing could make it more difficult for the Italian to get regular minutes. For now, Chiesa is just trying to come back from injury and earn a spot in Iraola’s team. But if his situation doesn’t improve, January could be a significant time in deciding his Liverpool future.
