Miami Heat star, weed entrepreneur and, as of last month, soccer team minority owner, Udonis Haslem is known for seeing a challenge and taking it head-on — both on and off the court. In his NBA playing days, that meant denying opposing players the chance to score. Off the court, though, it often means grinding it out in Anatomy Fitness’ #AnatomyHourPushUpChallenge, which raises money to benefit charities across South Florida.
“We’ve been doing this for years now, and every year the goal is the same: raise the bar. More push-ups, more money raised, and more impact in our community,” Haslem tells New Times.
Since 2019, the #AnatomyHourPushUpChallenge has raised more than $715,000 for charities in the community.
“OG,” as Haslem is known to avid Heat fans, has been participating in the fundraiser since 2021. The annual event challenges participants to see how many push-ups they can do in an hour. It all raises money for charity via pledges based on the total number of push-ups completed. The event has grown from a fun test for members of South Florida’s fitness community to one of its most popular philanthropic endeavors.
Over the years, Haslem has taken on just about everyone from Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine-Cava to his own head coach, Erik Spoelstra. The team behind Anatomy Fitness has watched the impact their “little challenge” has made throughout the community as it gears up for year eight.
This year, Haslem has upped the ante by enlisting his mentee and former teammate, Bam Adebayo. The former Miami Heat captain and current captain will go head-to-head to raise money for their prospective charities, the Udonis Haslem Foundation and Adebayo’s Bam, Books and Brotherhood (BBB) Foundation.
Team Anatomy is here for all of it. “Udonis has been instrumental in helping us grow its impact, and welcoming Bam and the BBB Foundation this year marks an exciting new chapter.”
As for Adebayo, he says there was no hesitation about participating once he got the call. “I’ve watched [Haslem] give back to Miami for as long as I’ve known him, and that’s something I’ve always respected,” the Heat superstar says of his mentor. “When the chance came to be a part of an event that’s already making a real impact in the community, it was an easy yes.”
In true Adebayo form, he’s still teasing his competitor: “I just have to make sure I don’t embarrass [Haslem] in the push-up count.”
