After playing the first four and a half seasons with All-Star Stephen Curry and the Golden State Warriors, Jonathan Kuminga will play his first season for the Minnesota Timberwolves in 2026-27. Kuminga signed a two-year contract with the Timberwolves, worth $12 million, and reported to his new team ahead of his formal media introduction, where he talked about watching LaMelo Ball.
Kuminga revealed he was amazed by Ball's passing ability while the new Timberwolves teammates worked out recently, he said, per Timberwolves reporter Andrew Dukowitz.
“I was watching him work out yesterday. I was watching him do certain things — just the way he passes the ball; it's incredible,” Kuminga said. “I’ve played with so many point guards in my career, but I’ve never played with anybody that can pass as good as LaMelo. I’m looking forward to it; I’m excited.”

When Jonathan Kuminga, who was traded to the Atlanta Hawks mid-season after not reaching a contract extension with the Warriors, gushed over Ball, some saw it as a slight to Stephen Curry. However, Kuminga's kind words about the veteran guard wasn't made in comparision to Curry. Still, fans were quick to think of the future Hall of Fame guard after Jonathan's quote surfaced on social media.
The Timberwolves traded for LaMelo Ball in June as part of a four-team blockbuster deal that sent Naz Reid, a 2033 first-round pick, three second-round picks, and three future first-round pick swaps to the Charlotte Hornets. The Timberwolves also acquired Josh Green and sent Julius Randle to the Brooklyn Nets for draft rights to guard Isaiah Evans.
Jonathan Kuminga's message to Timberwolves fans upon arrival
Timberwolves forward Jonathan Kuminga is eager to get to work, and shared his excitement upon arriving to Minnesota. While All-Star Anthony Edwards is thrilled about the Timberwolves' season, Kuminga had a message for his new fanbase.
Kuminga addressed Timberwolves fans shortly after landing in town.
“Wolves fans, this is JK here. Just landed in Minneapolis. I'm excited to get here and get to work. See you guys soon,” said the high-flying wingman.
The Timberwolves will begin their preseason against the Bucks on October 5.
