Jalen Duren appears to be willing to bet on himself, with the Detroit Pistons unable to meet his contract demands before the end of September.

According to NBA insider Marc Stein, Duren is becoming more and more open to accepting his one-year, $9.6 million qualifying offer that would allow him to play the 2026-27 season and become an unrestricted free agent next offseason.

“The challenge Duren faces hasn’t changed much since early July. He seeks a lucrative new five-year deal reflective of his leaps last season to All-Star and All-NBA status — playoff struggles be damned — but there is no team in the marketplace with salary cap space to make a run at Duren that exerts pressure on the Pistons to increase their offers.”

“One source briefed on the process says Duren is increasingly prepared to play out the coming season on his $9.6 million qualifying offer — with the intent to become an unrestricted free agent next summer — if no deal with Detroit materializes by the end of September. That would be a risky route to go for a player who achieved what Duren achieved last season, and there will naturally be considerable skepticism that the 22-year-old is truly willing to go the qualifying offer route until it actually happens … but let’s see how the rest of the month plays out.”

That lack of outside leverage has become the center of this stalemate.

Duren is coming off the best season of his career, averaging 19.5 points, 10.5 rebounds, and 2.0 assists while shooting 65.0% from the field. He earned his first All-Star selection and made the All-NBA Third Team, which have strengthened his belief that he deserves a massive long-term contract.

But the Pistons are not willing to reach his asking price. Previous reports have indicated that Duren is seeking a contract worth more than $40 million annually, while the Pistons have been operating closer to $35 million per year.

That gap is definitely way smaller than it was earlier in the offseason, but still, no agreement has been reached.

Stein now reports that Duren might be ready to use the only significant leverage available to him. But it would be an extremely risky move.

By accepting the qualifying offer, Duren would pass on the security of a long-term contract worth well over $150 million, and any serious injury or drop in form during the season could destroy his value before unrestricted free agency.

But still, the upside is obvious. If Duren repeats or improves his 2025-26 performance, he will enter the 2027 market with complete control over his future and with potentially more teams having cap space.

The Sacramento Kings have already emerged as one possible destination, with insiders noting that the Kings could create max-level room next summer. The Pistons also face a big risk if Duren takes the qualifying offer. Instead of locking up one of their best stars, they could risk losing him for nothing in 2027.

Draymond Green recently warned Duren about taking that path, arguing that leaving the organization where he developed could remove some of the security and patience that he had received from his original team.

But for now, Duren’s stance appears to be hardening.

Stein acknowledged that there is skepticism until Duren actually signs the qualifying offer, especially given how rarely players of this caliber choose this route. But with September moving along and no agreement in place, that threat is starting to look very real.

The Pistons still have time to close this gap. If they don’t, Duren may choose the most aggressive gamble available to him: $9.6 million now for a chance at a much larger payday and complete freedom next summer.
