Ronald Araujo was one of Liverpool’s standout players against Atletico Madrid, producing an impressive display to help the Reds secure a 2-1 Champions League victory at Anfield.
Araujo provided a clever assist for Dominik Szoboszlai’s equaliser and has now started Liverpool’s last two games at right-back, offering greater assurance than previous starter Jeremie Frimpong.

The Uruguayan has arguably been the better option so far this season despite being a natural centre-back. Speaking after the game, Andoni Iraola made clear he has no concerns about using the 27-year-old in the role.
Iraola said: “I think he’s been very, very good. The other day [against Ipswich Town] and he has been, I would say, even better today.
“I think he’s defending really well his side, but also sometimes because he’s a centre-back we underrate his offensive side. Today he gives a great assist to Dom Szoboszlai.
“He’s made a couple of very good serves from his position and I’m very happy with him. Very happy. He’s come with the willingness to show that he belongs to this level, and I hope we can keep him there because he’s in a lovely place.”
Araujo joined Liverpool from Barcelona on a season-long loan deal during the summer transfer window, with the Reds holding an option to make the move permanent for €55million (£47.2m) next summer.
According to Spanish outlet AS, some figures at Anfield are already calling for Liverpool to make Araujo’s transfer permanent.
The Uruguay international took a pay cut to secure his move to Merseyside and has impressed with his versatility, capable of playing both centre-back and right-back.
Araujo has registered one assist in four appearances for Andoni Iraola’s side this season. He has reportedly formed strong relationships with Alisson, Alexis Mac Allister and Victor Munoz, while he and his family have moved into a house close to the AXA Training Centre.
Araujo spoke to Spanish media, including AS, after the win over Atletico Madrid to discuss his adaptation to the team and his departure from Barcelona.
“The manager gives me the confidence to play freely, to push forward. I’m happy. It’s not a position I’m unfamiliar with (right-back),” he said.
“In the end, I’ve played there many times, and the manager knows I can help anywhere. I’m always ready to help the team. My adaptation has gone very well. My family and I are very happy.
“I think the ‘click’ happened earlier, personally. Obviously, a change is always good, and I came to a big club, just as big as Barca, with very high expectations as well. I’m enjoying playing , and the results of my hard work will show.
“Since I arrived, the manager and the coaching staff and I have done a great job getting me up to speed, and that’s showing in the matches, because I’m feeling good.”
