**Liverpool will look to make a specific signing in a key area of the pitch next year, according to a promising update from reliable journalist Ben Jacobs.**
There was plenty of dissatisfaction with the Reds’ summer transfer window, with right-back and central midfield among the positions not strengthened at all.
But speaking on [_talkSPORT_](https://talksport.com/football/4569378/liverpool-transfer-alexis-mac-allister-alex-scott/), Jacobs has claimed that Liverpool will seek a new signing in the middle of the park in 2027, which could be an issue for Alexis Mac Allister:
_“My understanding is this Liverpool strategy is very different to other Premier League clubs, because when you get only two years left on your current contract, if you’re not going to offer a deal, the player tends to become available at the right price on the market. With two years left, you’re going to get the fee you’re looking for. One year left, you’re in a weaker position._
_“But Liverpool’s strategy, as with Ibrahima Konate, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Mo Salah, Virgil van Dijk, whether the players stay or go, they’re prepared to get value on the existing deal and run that contract down. This is what is happening with Alexis Mac Allister.“He would be open to a new deal. Manchester City had made an inquiry over the summer and were told the player was not for sale._
_“But Liverpool’s perspective is that you have two different things at play. One is, are you going to renew? The other is, are you going to eke out every game and minute of the existing deal, even if the player leaves for less or even on a free transfer?_
_“At the moment, Liverpool’s plan is to add a midfielder in Mac Allister’s position in 2027. And if they do so, Mac Allister falls down the pecking order. That’s why, at the moment, they’re not prepared to offer him a new deal, even though there is value for him, certainly between now and next summer.”_

The decision not to add to the midfield this summer felt reckless, and while Mac Allister is playing far better and Trey Nyoni is an exciting young player, a new face felt essential.
Next year, at least one fresh face has to arrive in midfield, whether it be English talents like Adam Wharton or Alex Scott, or the likes of Lamine Camara and Manu Kone from Monaco and Juventus respectively.
It may well be that Mac Allister departs if a contract extension isn’t agreed, while Ryan Gravenberch’s lack of football this season may leave him considering his options.
Even if everyone stays, though, a midfielder must be brought in to add new life in the middle of the park for Andoni Iraola, ensuring things don’t go stale there.
