Xabi Alonso has challenged Chelsea to become more balanced after another chaotic performance ended with a remarkable 6-3 victory over Leeds United.
Chelsea recovered from two goals down at Stamford Bridge to reach the Carabao Cup fourth round, with Cole Palmer, Pedro Neto, Danny Welbeck and Valentin Barco all scoring during a remarkable second half.
As covered in ReadChelsea’s Chelsea 6-3 Leeds match report, Alonso needed four half-time changes before his side finally took control.
The attacking numbers are increasingly impressive. Chelsea have already scored 16 goals across Alonso’s first five matches.
However, their head coach knows that cannot disguise the need for greater control.

Chelsea balance must improve before Hull
Alonso told Chelsea’s official website after the Leeds victory: “We want to have better balance, to be more solid, to be able to win in a boring game as well.”
It is a revealing admission.
Chelsea conceded three times against Leeds only days after losing 2-1 at Arsenal, where their midfield struggled without Moises Caicedo.
Alonso has already admitted Chelsea may have brought Caicedo back too quickly from injury.
The midfielder’s availability could therefore become increasingly important as Alonso searches for the control his side currently lack.
Wednesday also demonstrated the gap between Chelsea’s strongest attacking combinations and the heavily rotated side.
Alonso subsequently took responsibility for Chelsea’s fringe players struggling against Leeds rather than publicly blaming those given opportunities.
There are significant positives.
Morgan Rogers produced another hugely influential performance off the bench, with his second-half creativity underlining his growing Chelsea importance.
But Alonso now wants Chelsea to combine that attacking threat with greater stability.
Hull City visit Stamford Bridge on Saturday at 3pm, before Chelsea travel to Brentford a week later.
Those fixtures give Alonso an immediate opportunity to show Chelsea can win without requiring another spectacular rescue act.
