Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard believes the club will offer Alexis Mac Allister a contract extension, assuming he continues to perform better on the pitch.
The Argentine isn’t normally one to make headlines, but his fiery press conference on Tuesday changed that, making it clear how he felt about not being given a new deal:
“I received the news that the club was not in a position to offer me a new contract, which of course makes me very, very sad,” he told reporters on Tuesday. Everyone can see I give 100 percent for this football club, every single day in training, games.
“Of course, I can have very good games, bad games, like everyone, but I always give my best. I see Dominik and Ryan renewing their contracts and that makes me very happy because they deserve it, but at the same time it makes me a little bit sad that I didn’t get mine.”
Now, speaking on TNT Sports [via TEAMtalk] after Mac Allister’s match-winning performance against Atletico Madrid in the Champions League on Wednesday, Gerrard said Liverpool’s No.10 will get his wish if he keeps playing like he did at Anfield:
“I thought his performance tonight was outstanding. Let your football do the talking. Consistency, top performance, show your experience. Show you’re a top international. This club will reward you.”

Mac Allister was excellent against Atletico, not only scoring a memorable winning goal in front of the Kop, but generally playing with far more quality and influence than he did last season.
In truth, the 27-year-old’s displays in 2025/26 didn’t merit a contract extension, but when he is at his best, he could be one of the first names on Andoni Iraola’s team sheet.
Mac Allister is clearly hurt about the situation, especially as Ryan Gravenberch and Dominik Szoboszlai were handed deals, but he produced the perfect response on Wednesday night.
If the carries on in this vein for the rest of the season, a new contract makes complete sense for the World Cup winner, and he will hopefully be buoyed by Gerrard’s comments.
