The San Francisco 49ers could have a serious problem on their hands in 2026, and it centers on a pass rush that may not have enough proven firepower. With the defense relying on a mix of established stars and younger talent, keeping pressure on opposing quarterbacks could become one of the team’s biggest challenges.
The concern becomes more significant because Nick Bosa remains the centerpiece of the defensive front. The All-Pro edge rusher can change games by himself, but asking one player to consistently carry the pass rush creates an obvious vulnerability. Opposing offenses can devote extra attention to him, making the production of the players around him increasingly important.

Osa Odighizuwa was brought in to strengthen the interior and give the defensive line another disruptive presence. His ability to generate pressure from the middle could prevent quarterbacks from simply stepping up in the pocket to avoid outside rushers. Still, the 49ers need that impact to translate into consistent production, particularly on passing downs.
Mykel Williams also represents a major part of the team’s hopes for a stronger front. The young defender has the physical tools to develop into a dangerous pass rusher, but there is a difference between having potential and producing consistently against NFL offensive linemen. San Francisco may need him to accelerate that development sooner than expected.

Biggest concern: The pass rush. In 2025, San Francisco finished last in the NFL in sacks (20). It brought in defensive tackle Osa Odighizuwa, but it’s still fair to wonder if the 49ers have enough on the edge with Nick Bosa and Mykel Williams coming off ACL injuries and rookie Romello Height replacing Bryce Huff. If the pass rush isn’t markedly better, it could be another long season for the defense.
That uncertainty has fueled speculation that the 49ers could eventually look outside the roster for additional help. A proven pass rusher could give the defense another player offenses have to account for while allowing the coaching staff to rotate its linemen more aggressively. The challenge is finding the right player and making the financial and roster commitment necessary to acquire him.
San Francisco has enough talent to remain competitive, but the pass rush could determine how high this team can climb in 2026. If Bosa gets consistent support and the younger pieces develop quickly, the concern could fade, but if the pressure remains too dependent on one star, the 49ers may eventually have to make a significant move to fix the problem.
