For all the talk about what kind of havoc on defense Myles Garrett would bring to the Los Angeles Rams, that simply did not manifest in his debut for his new team on Thursday.
The two-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year Garrett did not even show up on the box scores of the Rams' 27-7 loss at the hands of the San Francisco 49ers in Melbourne, Australia. He had zero sacks, zero tackles and zero quarterback hits. It was the fourth time only in his career that he laid eggs in those areas, according to Ari Meirov of The 33rd Team.
Meanwhile, Matthew Stafford and the Rams' offense wasn't very pretty either. Since Stafford took over as the team's signal-caller, the seven points the Rams produced against San Francisco were the fewest they had in a game. The loss was also their first by at least 10 points since 2024.
The Rams traded for Garrett with the Cleveland Browns, acquiring the seven-time Pro Bowler in exchange for Jared Verse and future picks. Garrett's addition to Los Angeles made the Rams an even bigger team to watch, but his debut with the NL West team proved anticlimactic.
Few would have thought he would have such little impact on the game, but it could also be because of the bold travel arrangement by the Rams, who decided to fly to Australia just a day before the 49ers game.
The Rams will look to be better when they return to familiar territory for a Week 2 game against the New York Giants at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood.
