The San Francisco 49ers took care of business in Australia on Friday, walloping the Los Angeles Rams, 27-7, at Melbourne Cricket Ground. It, however, could be costly after tight end Jake Tonges left the game due to a knee injury.
Tonges needed assistance in hobbling off the field in the second quarter. He had to be carted off to the locker room and was quickly ruled out for the remainder of the contest.
After the game, coach Kyle Shanahan gave an ominous update on Tonges' status, as reported by NBC Sports Bay Area's Matt Maiocco.
“49ers coach Kyle Shanahan said TE Jake Tonges' knee injury ‘wasn't good.' They will be doing more evaluations on the extent of the injury,” wrote Maiocco on X.

It will be a tough blow for the 49ers if the 27-year-old Tonges is sidelined for an extended period, especially since tight end George Kittle is still trying to regain his form after recovering from an Achilles injury.
Despite the exit of Tonges, San Francisco remained composed and did not allow Los Angeles to mount a late rally. The 49ers held the Rams to their lowest output since adding quarterback Matthew Stafford in 2021.
Tonges, who is in his third season, signed a two-year, $8 million contract extension in March.
The 49ers also lost wide receiver De'Zhaun Stribling to an ankle injury in the first quarter. He did not return to the game. According to Maiocco, Stribling will undergo further evaluations to make sure that he did not sustain other damage.
