Next up, it’s over to the Hill Dickinson Stadium, where Everton are still reeling from a nightmare Deadline Day that saw them miss out on a host of new signings. In recent days, the Toffees have been linked with a bold move for free agent Mauro Icardi, who left Galatasaray at the end of last season.
According to Turkish outlet Aykiri, the 33-year-old could now opt to retire rather than pursuing a final chapter in his footballing career. They claim that he has now “stopped personal training” and recently turned down a move to Lazio. Icardi spent five seasons at Galatasaray, scoring an impressive 65 goals in 96 league matches.
The 3AM Verdict: Everton should not attempt to sign Icardi, it’s as simple as that. We’ve seen plenty of over-the-hill strikers come to the Premier League for one last dance, only to look a mile off the pace and end up ending their career in an embarrassing fashion. By the sounds of things, he wouldn’t be up for the move anyway, which is just as well.

We’ll draw things to a close at Anfield, where Liverpool battled their way to a hard-fought 2-1 win over Atletico Madrid to get their Champions League campaign up and running on Wednesday night. According to Team Talk, Liverpool still “dream” of signing Bayern Munich’s Michael Olise, as they look to take their mega-money attack to the next level.
The report asserts that the Reds, who signed Bradley Barcola for £123m late on in the summer window, are keen on signing Olise, but could be scuppered if Bayern get their way and tie the France international down to a new contract. It’s suggested that a release clause in said deal could potentially pave the way for Liverpool to sign him, but whether they could reach the likely astronomical fee remains to be seen.
The 3AM Verdict: Liverpool really faffed about when it came to signing Barcola, failing to sign top target Yan Diomande before paying a whopping fee for the PSG winger instead. Olise would be the perfect Mohamed Salah replacement, and with Barcola on the left and Florian Wirtz in the middle, Liverpool’s attack would be potent. We can’t see them signing Olise any time soon, however.
