Justin Jefferson reveals real reason he turned down Vikings' 2023 contract offer 1
The day before the 2023 season opener, Justin Jefferson turned down a Minnesota Vikings extension that would have paid him more than $28 million per season, according to ESPN. In an interview clip that circulated on Thursday, the receiver walked through why he said no.
“It’s difficult. It’s hard. There’s a lot of things that play a part. I had a great support system around me, my family, my agent, my agency, all of the different people that helped me along the way. At the end of the day, I always have confidence in myself. I always have confidence in myself to overcome any obstacle in the way. The contract language wasn’t the right language that we wanted. It wasn’t exactly where we wanted to be.
“So instead of just looking at the dollar signs and the zeros behind it, it was more about signing a contract that put me in a good situation and obviously didn’t hurt me in the long run,” Jefferson said.

At the 2024 scouting combine, Vikings GM Kwesi Adofo-Mensah, who has kept the terms of those talks private, said:
“Two years left, there’s uncertainty that somebody’s gotta hold, either the club’s gotta hold or the player’s gotta hold it. There’s new money, old money, how do you look at contracts? Those are very hard conversations to have. And so a lot of them don’t get done. We got unbelievably close.”
New money against old money is a question of how a deal is built, which is the same ground Jefferson covers when he talks about language.

What did waiting on the language cost, and what did it buy?
Jefferson strained his right hamstring in early October, and the first injury of his career cost him seven games. He still finished with 1,074 receiving yards, the most ever by a player who appeared in 10 or fewer games in a season.
“Sadly, I did get hurt that season, but later on I still achieved that goal of having 1,000 yards that year,” Jefferson said. “There were a lot of moving parts, a lot of chess pieces that moved during that year.”

The extension arrived in June 2024 at four years and $140 million, with $110 million guaranteed and $88.743 million due at signing. Its $35 million average made him the highest-paid non-quarterback in NFL history at the time, $1 million a year above Nick Bosa’s mark.
